Songs Meme
For some reason, the topic of favourite songs cropped up at work today, and three of us attempted to list our favourite twenty songs in the pub later on. Despite differences in ages and musical tastes, each of the three lists matched at least three bands from the other two lists.
If you fancy taking part, the rules are as follows. Pick your top twenty songs, with a maximum of one per band; don’t worry about the order. It would take forever to rank them. Just your top twenty. Don’t worry about the fact you’d pick a different top twenty in a different mood, just give me your top twenty now.
Ideally, in the meme spirit, if you have your own blog, post about it there, rather than here, and just let me know how many (if any) bands you matched with me, and what your comments are on my choices, which are as follows:
- I Am The Owl (Dead Kennedys)
- I Predict A Riot (Kaiser Chiefs)
- Jean Genie (David Bowie)
- American Trilogy (Elvis P)
- Blue Monday (New Order)
- Vengeance (New Model Army)
- Oliver’s Army (Elvis C)
- A Day In The Life (The Beatles)
- Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones)
- When The Music Stops (Eminem)
- Take It Easy (The Eagles)
- Ghost Town (The Specials)
- Eton Rifles (The Jam)
- No More Heroes (The Stranglers)
- Radio Ga Ga (Queen)
- A Tout Le Monde (Megadeth)
- Beasley Street (John Cooper Clarke)
- Temple Of Love (Sisters Of Mercy)
- Frayed Ends Of Sanity (Metallica)
- Parklife (Blur)
There you go. Now feel free to criticise my taste in music — although I’d rather know about the ones you agree with me on. You may notice, as Ben Elton would say, a little bit of politics in some of my selections.
Bowie, Stones, New Order, Blur - yep, though I wouldn’t choose those particular songs.
John Cooper Clarke - I used to be a big fan. Costello - same.
Queen and Metallica - I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt there.
I’ve posted my list on my blog - it’s incomplete at the moment but I’ll finish it today. Okay, I’ve put two Beatles songs but I really had to restrain myself from adding more. Anyway, we’ve three matches. See what you think.
Just to be devil’s advocate: I’m surprised that there’s only *one* song from the last 15 (ish) years ?? (I’m thinking of the Blur track here, maybe the Eminem one sneaks in there too..)
@Mike: Eminem one was post 2000, so yes. As was I Predict A Riot. For The Sisters of Mercy it’s actually the 1992 version of the song I had in mind, and the Megadeth one was 1994. So that’s actually 5 from the last 15 years … not so bad now, eh?
Also, I make no bones about the fact that a lot of my musical tastes tend to classic rock/punk, and most of the best of that stuff is “of its time” so there was always going to be a 70s/80s thing.
@Steve, thinking as I do that Freddie Mercury was probably the finest frontman a band has ever had, I had to stick a Queen one in…
ah, yes.
I was actually thinking of the Blur track as the 15 year marker. Kaisers was the single track I had in mind. Just me being vague as ever.
Let’s change ‘15′ to ‘12′… and start again.
;-)
I’ll have to give this thing a go meself.
Re John Cooper Clarke, I had ‘I Married a Monster From Outer Space’ with a triangular shaped disc in either blue or orange vinyl.
Stranglers I had one of their singles in white vinyl if memory serves me right. And didn’t The Jam do various gimmicks when they re-released all of their early singles? Oh dear, I feel another list coming on…
