You heard it here first…
Several thousand angry Newcastle fans congregated outside the main reception at St James’ Park to chant “We want Freddy Shepherd out” last night after Sheffield United’s first away win of the season left Glenn Roeder’s side second bottom of the Premiership.
…While the Toon Army largely admire Roeder for the attractive, slick passing, brand of football he is endeavouring to introduce and understand that he has been hampered by both injuries and the club’s failure to make sufficient high-calibre signings during the summer transfer window, Shepherd is the focus of their ire.
You know, this all sounds terribly familiar:
Not that I’m holding Roeder responsible for the current mess. He lost Shearer to retirement, Owen to injury, Ameobi to injury, Dyer to persistent injuries, Bowyer to West Ham to cut down our wage Bill, and Boumsong to Juventus because frankly they were daft enough to give us money for him. He’s had a net transfer spend of about £12m to replace all of these. Is it any wonder we’re short of firepower?
…The blame, as I’ve said before, lies squarely at Freddie’s door. We need investment, we need lots of it, and we needed it last summer.
Shepherd Out.
Any journalists wanting to assess the mood of Newcastle’s supporters are welcome to give me a shout, since I appear to be ahead of you.
