What could it possibly mean when a pub advertises its wares with the slogan “Ask Al”?
Could it be that Al is one of the regulars, who has an encylopedic knowledge second-to-none and serves as the Oracle of the Station Hotel?
Is it that Geordie legend Alan Shearer is doing a talk-in, and you will have the opportunity to ask him questions about his football career?
Well, if you don’t know the pub, these might sound plausible. But despite being only a few hundred yards from the Tyneside Hilton (not a euphemism: the actual Hilton Hotel), it’s in an area that you’d probably describe as run-down. Or maybe dingy. It’s emphatically not the sort of pub where you would order a glarss of wine.
Does that give you enough of a clue as to Al’s identity?
No? What about if I gave you a ‘C’, an ‘E’ and an ‘S’?
