When you don’t really want to stay, but can’t think of a good reason…
Watching CITV with my kids the other weekend, I discovered they were fans of something called Captain Mack. As kids TV goes, it’s fairly bog standard; caricatures in big bright costumes with a pantomime villain.
However, at the end, when Captain Mack had saved the day — by finding the baddie who had taken the Mayor’s birthday cake, balloons and presents — he was invited to stay for the Mayor’s birthday party.
He declined, saying:
I’d love to, but I can’t. My monkey needs me, and I have a special mission.Captain Mack
Can you just imagine dropping that into a conversation, when you genuinely don’t want to stay, but can’t think of a good excuse? It’s be great…
“Do you want to stay for a cup of tea?”
“I’d love to, but I can’t. My monkey needs me, and I have a special mission.”
No-one’s going to argue with you. They’ll just be pleased you’re going…
